Is Buying Preloved Luxury Worth It?
The global preloved and secondhand luxury market crossed the $38 billion threshold in 2025. More shoppers than ever are choosing authenticated secondhand over retail and not just because of price.
Here is an honest look at whether buying preloved luxury is actually worth it in 2026, and what to watch out for.
The Case For
Why Preloved Makes Sense
You save significantly. Louis Vuitton just had a price increase across the board on May 27, 2026. A Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM has gone up by 3.2%. Increasing from $2170 to a whopping $2240. A preloved AB rank version in great condition can be found for around $1100. Same bag, same craftsmanship, same materials, at nearly half the price. We sold our Neverfull PM for $888.
Some pieces hold or gain value. Hermès Birkins and Kellys are the most obvious example, but even classic Louis Vuitton and Chanel pieces tend to hold their resale value well. Buying preloved means you are not absorbing the immediate depreciation hit of a new purchase.
You access discontinued styles. The Neverfull MM in Damier Azure, the LV Monogram Graffiti Keepall, the Chanel Chocolate Bar bag. These pieces no longer exist at retail. The only way to own them is through the resale market.
It is more sustainable. Extending the life of a luxury piece reduces demand for new production. It is something we take seriously at Reluxe Vault, and it is woven into our mission.
The Risks
What to Watch Out For
Counterfeits are a real problem. The fake luxury market is sophisticated and growing. This is the biggest risk in buying preloved, and it is why authentication is not optional. At Reluxe Vault, we use Entrupy for almost every bag we sell. Buying from a private seller or unverified marketplace means taking on real risk.
Condition transparency is everything. At Reluxe Vault, we photograph every piece after a through evaluation. If there is visible wear, scratchs, or any damage, we show it. No hiding it in shadows, no glossing over it with flattering angles. Too many resellers list a condition grade and leave it at that, letting you find out the hard way when the bag arrives. We believe you should know exactly what you are getting before you commit.
Not every brand holds value equally. If value retention matters to you, focus on classic styles from Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Goyard. I'll have a blog post soon on the bags to avoid when buying new that are notorious for losing value.
How to Do It Right
What Smart Preloved Shopping Looks Like
The buyers who get the most out of the preloved market do a few things consistently.
They shop from sources that authenticate. Not just "authenticated by the seller," which means nothing, but verified by a third party with a documented process.
They understand condition rankings. An AB rank piece from Japan and a "very good" listing on a peer-to-peer platform are not the same thing. Knowing the difference saves money and disappointment.
They are patient. The best pieces move quickly, but good inventory surfaces regularly. We update The VAULT Finds every Tuesday with fresh pieces sourced directly from Japan.
They buy what they love. The preloved market rewards genuine taste. If you are buying a bag because you love it, you will get value from it regardless of where the market goes.
Final Word
Is It Worth It?
For almost everyone, yes. You get more "bag" for your money, you shop more sustainably, and you get access to pieces that simply do not exist at retail anymore. The key is buying from sources you trust!
